Artist Statement
After decades of design and visual work in theatre and retail, I’ve turned my artistic focus from the commercial to the deeply personal.
Art made “for me” is often driven by a desire to express the deeper layers to be found within images and stories promoted by popular media.
My current work re-examines a series of playful pre-war photos of kids in Kiev. In graphite and acrylic, it paints them in the much darker light of the effects of the atrocities of war. Using an old cardboard drop cloth for a canvas speaks to the way the media marginalizes these horrors as “collateral damage,” not the long term devastation of innocent lives that far outweighs the destruction of mere buildings.
