Artist Statement
This photograph was shot on the abandoned Alameda Naval Station. I am drawn to this place by its rusting architecture full of history – the beauty in what was and what still is to be. Perhaps as a matter of fate, shortly after the shoot and several days before my 80th birthday, I fell down some stairs, fracturing a few bones and bruising my ego. The image assumed a more personal meaning; the light I had captured played with these stairs transforming them from obstacle to art. While healing, I reflected on my past careers devoted to advocacy: I spoke out, I stepped up. The climb may be perilous at times, but the light when you see it (divine perhaps?), lifts you.
