When the pandemic really kicked off, I began making portraits of my colleagues in the restaurant business. We all lost our jobs overnight and were facing a sea change in the industry. Making portraits was my way of celebrating my friends, creating mythical characters out of them, imbuing their images with magical power. On a purely formal level, the portraits gave me a chance to combine drawing with painted paper collage, two areas of my practice that I had kept separate in the past.
