Artist Statement
The old shipyards at Pier 70 are some of the last somewhat intact vestiges of working class industrial San Francisco. For this piece, I combined digital photography in a construction with actual materials gathered at the site. As a photographer, I appreciate finding odd beauty in things that most people overlook, and find pleasure in weathered textures of things that have been lived in and left behind. I have a special reverence for former industrial spaces in their majesty and quiet vitality, with their bright palimpsest of graffiti—left to decay in their going-back-to-nature “natural” state. As if the spaces themselves become somehow sanctified over time.
