Artist Statement
The city environment can seem harsh and impersonal, yet it also presents beautiful expressions of the human element in symbiosis with the natural world. I am drawn to buildings with exterior fire escapes: utilitarian objects that transform when the Sun shines upon them, creating repeating patterns of light and shade. These intricate shapes seem fixed, yet they capture a specific moment in time due to the Sun's daily march across the sky. In "Yin Yang," San Francisco’s Chinatown adds rich history and culture to these patterns. I am intrigued by the balance of opposites shown with the side-by-side buildings: the intricate detail on the left with the more plain façade on the right.
