This piece consists of 152 individual portraits organized in two groups: (1) Freedom Riders from 1961 and (2) election deniers from 2021. For me this juxtaposition epitomizes the battle to control democracy in the United States. On one hand we have citizens, primarily without a power base, acting collectively but as individuals to right social wrongs regarding individual freedom - the ability to be seen and treated equally regardless of race. The activists, shown here from their mugshots in Jackson, Mississippi, were all jailed, many for months. On the other hand we have a fraudulent attempt initiated by the leader of our country to disenfranchise half of the citizens by usurping their vote.
