Could memory have the power to transport an enslaved people to freedom? In his novel, “The Water Dancer,” Ta-Nehisi Coates poses the question: What if the captives who leaped from slave ships into the Atlantic Ocean were not drowning themselves in terror and anguish but going home, dancing among the waves in one last song of triumph?
