When trees suffer a violent death as in fires, where do they go? Do they haunt the ground they left behind? There is no way to count their rings in the ash. When I see tree rings, they remind me of the ancient Chinese symbol for “return,” one circle inside the other. With my lines, I attempt to capture their spectral impression and celebrate the hopes of new life growing from these ashes in a sense of renewal.
