Michelle Echenique is a mixed media, multidisciplinary artist meaning she works in a myriad of ways with an expansive list of materials. There is a through line in the work via the nature of materials she chooses, which is typically what people throw away. Finding a second use for muselets, the wire cages atop champagne bottles, is a prime example of Echenique's process. Trashing perfectly good, colorful metal wire was impossible. Plus, their individual shapes, especially when flattened, she found intriguing. Recalling El Anatsui’s liquor bottle cap works, she began weaving the muselets using only wire from the cages. The resulting textured piece, and its cast shadows, is broadly evocative.
