Artist Statement
"Bernard in Gold" captures the recently deceased San Francisco artist Bernard Catchings. My friend and Project Artaud neighbor of 50+ years, he created most of my frames including this gold leaf frame for this painting. I painted this to honor Bernard as his health was failing but wanted to preserve his nature of strength and light, as an African American man living and working in San Francisco. The subtle light falling over his form brings him to life in this painting that honors his life and his art.
