"At Last Hope" was created in response to the anxiety caused by the pandemic. It is hand drawn and cut paper of three layers. I work with paper because it has some amazing qualities. It is tougher than you think. It's a wonder how the web like structure holds together as thinly as I cut it. And the stiff paper I use becomes more flowing like fabric with each piece I cut away. My process is to visualize, not sketch, until I have a general idea of the image I will be cutting. I like to improvise as I cut as it keeps the process interesting. I use an X-Acto type knife and many blades as a sharp tip is essential.
