Artist Statement
The portrait is inspired by a well-known work by Botticelli, "Portrait of a Youth." It is an intriguing tale of a secret hand sign that was used by the Medici family in the XV century and by the West Side gang in the XXI century. The hand gesture is a symbol of power and wealth, and it has been used by both the Medici family and the West Side gang to show their dominance. The portrait is a reminder of the power of symbols and how they remain relevant throughout history.
