Artist Statement
The hairless Xoloitzcuintli (Xolo) dog is native to Mexico and is believed by some to be a guide to the Underworld. Xolos have served as artistic muses for thousands of years, in statuary, and in paintings by Frida Kahlo. This Xolo is tattooed with images by Mexican artist Jose Guadalupe Posada (1852-1913), whose satirical calavera (skeleton) portraits resonate with Day of the Dead imagery. While navigating through a worldwide pandemic I turned to my Mexican heritage for any guides that offer humor and hope at the door of the Underworld and Xolos are there for me. This is one of a series.
