Artist Statement
Inspired by a Goya drawing of civilians fleeing the chaos of the Napoleonic wars, and by a current video clip of a coast guard soldier taking a baby from one boat into another in the Mediterranean--a tragedy which repeats through the centuries. The energy and depths of the ink washes express the intense desperation of the refugees.
