Artist Statement
I think of my work as either “Prayers For Peace” or “Prayers For the Earth.” I begin with a grid of squares in light pencil over the empty canvas or sheet of paper. The drawings are inspired by and pay tribute to anonymous artisans, usually women and children, who have worked for centuries, and continue to work laboriously, creating fabrics and textiles to clothe, decorate and bring warmth and beauty to everyday life, frequently under horrific working conditions. I title these pieces after the names of the pencils I’ve used. "Drawing For Anni Albers” is uniquely titled for this often overlooked textile artist, in favor of her husband, Josef Albers.
