This series of paintings is the first where I am painting about my addiction, 9 years after getting sober. My very first addiction was an eating disorder, and last summer was the first time I was willing to face it. In many ways this year was one of the hardest since my early years of sobriety. I relied heavily in the past on nicotine and my eating disorder as coping mechanisms. I must do something with the pain and the feelings. I won’t sit with them. I’ve always chosen to paint from the perspective of gratitude. With this new series, the perspective is acceptance. I am at the beginning of my journey in seeking catharsis, and maybe even answers in my work.
