Many craft theorists discuss the oppositional play involved in using handcraft techniques in contemporary contexts. "Proper(ty)" explores this concept by disrupting the intended messages found in printed artifacts through the use of vintage lace and thread. The printed artifacts are collected from vintage magazines, advertisements, and pamphlets that have messaging about what a woman should be and how to behave. Combining the technique of sewing with the collaged paper is meant to demonstrate the fragility of these notions in our contemporary world. How women, men and the LGBTQIA2S+ communities are pushing against these notions in different ways. These stereotypes are holding on by a thread.
