This is a deeply personal work about mourning the death of my mother. She passed away ten years ago and the loss still feels immense. As time goes on I am always trying to find ways to evoke her spirit through memories in order to feel closer to her and for fear that they will otherwise fade. In the painting, a self-portrait, I am wearing black to signify mourning. In my lap is the urn that holds my mother's ashes and on the wall are pictures of her throughout her life. The expression on my face was not planned but is evident of the enduring pain of loss.
