"A Tribute to Frans Hals" was conceptualized and structured using fine point Japanese ink pens, acrylic paint and colored pencils directly upon an enlargement of a close-up photograph I took of a small segment of the painting "Portrait of a Young Man" by Frans Hals (1648). While working directly on the surface of the enlargement a landscape begins to emerge which simultaneously removes the realism of the photograph. The photograph becomes abstract and the applied landscape becomes the expression of realism. (The original photo was not digitally altered or manipulated in any way.)
