Artist Statement
The painting is an abstracted map of San Francisco. Dividing the city into 16 sections, each panel is a grouping of neighborhoods. Using information from individual census tracts, the panels map the quantity, location and pattern of ethnic groups within a neighborhood. Each color (including white) represents one of the seven major ethnic groups as defined by the US Census. The size of the color blocks correlates to the population size.
