After three decades making sculpture, puppets, drawing in charcoal, ink and graphite, I began working in oil only in 2019.
I am a very slow learner and believe that oil painting is difficult and beguiling enough that I can paint for several lifetimes without knowing exactly what I am doing and return to my studio each day with much anticipation. Because of this each painting I finish to satisfaction is simply a painting about how to paint. For my subjects, I’m drawn to people caught off guard, in a moment before or after a scene, unknowable but perhaps in some way sensed.
