Etel Adnan's recent retrospective at the Guggenheim made me look at my hometown anew. Her poetic paintings of Mt Tamalpais were shocking in their simplicity, and they inspired me to look more closely at my neighborhood. The mountain looms large in Mill Valley, California, where I've lived for over twenty years. As I walk, I note changes in the light, color, and shadows. Every day is different, and a possible, new composition.
