In medieval art, a diptych usually consisted of two panels joined together by a hinge. This ancient art form possesses an uncanny ability to resist passive viewing. Each panel either complements or challenges the other, throwing energy back and forth like a perpetual ping-pong game. When choosing two seemingly unrelated photographs to pair, I look for some intangible conceptual “hinge” that will make them tell more story together than when presented apart, the common thread that will set in motion this continuous dialogue, creating visual synergy, prompting new ideas, and challenging the viewer.
