Artist Statement
This piece began as a discussion about monarch butterflies with my friend. He told me he was building a butterfly garden because the monarchs needed a safe place because they are an endangered species. I had no idea! I started to research the monarchs and their migration patterns. This brought me to thinking about migration and how people move across the world. I started to look at jet streams and ocean currents, which brought me to global warming and coastal environments. The marks I use in this work are my own, relevant to the size of my hand and reach. They flow like the currents of the ocean and follow the patterns of our world.
