Artist Statement
The panopticon is a mode of surveillance in which the surveilled believe themselves to be watched constantly, never sure if they are being watched or ignored due to the nature of the surveillance system. The panopticon is a model for external surveillance, but panopticism takes place internally, when the watcher ceases to be external to the watched. Instead, the gaze of the watcher is internalized, making the subject of the gaze their own observer. I apply this concept to the male gaze, or rather the internalized male gaze, a strong and persistent voice that pierces the mind of the objectified. Although we are not constantly monitored, the gaze is ever present.
