Artist Statement
This artwork is part of a series of drawings inspired by the first images released from NASA's James Webb space telescope. The drawing incorporates colors and markings found in the Carina Nebula in our galaxy. The work uses local geology, radiolarian chert rock, from Bernal Heights Summit in San Francisco. The drawing is created in collaboration with rocks, natural light and shadows from our closest star, the sun. Because the drawing includes time and site-specific shadows, it is documented using photography. This mark-making is an act of presence, remembering our relationship to our changing climate, common home planet, solar system, and expansive galaxy.
