Artist Statement
This piece gently satirizes the history of still life genre painting, which rose to prominence during the Golden Era of Dutch painting—an era that coincided with the rise of deeply extractive trading methods to foster a new economic and political order in early modern Europe and abroad. Both genre painting and botanicals were active participants in this rise of early capitalism, as exotic botanicals and still life paintings were traded prolifically amongst the rising merchant class. This still life allows for both the beauty and the dark humor in the contemporary decorative vessel of the plastic garbage bin, designed to contain the organic waste of invasive decorative species run amok.
