Artist Statement
My artwork investigates issues of identity, mysticism, and ritual. "Spirit Land" is about a peaceful transition to the afterlife. It is made from a rubbing on silk of an old tombstone that reads “Free from the cares and sorrows of this world and at rest in the peaceful dwelling of spirit land.” I was struck by the use of spirit land on such an old headstone and the image that it conjures up. A milagro of a figure is walking through the gates of heaven. A dove holds an olive branch in its beak as a symbol of peace. It is framed with typewriter ribbon filled with prayers and petitions. A small block print of a skeleton sits to the right of the poem.
