"The Dowry Project" is an examination of memory and family connections in the wake of my mother's passing, and it references the old Italian tradition of families passing on to their daughters household textiles, at the time of marriage.
In the project images from my family photo archive are transferred to vintage textiles through the cyanotype process and further toned with natural dyes. Through this alchemy the fabrics that were once used in the course of daily life acquire new meaning.
Blending the materiality of textiles with the ephemeral nature of memory, "The Dowry" becomes the ultimate inheritance, a cathartic process of mourning, remembrance and consolation.
