Artist Statement
During Covid, I did many paintings about places that were meaningful to me. This the the view from my bedroom where I had a residency at Jiwar in Barcelona for a month in each of the 2017 and 2018 summers. The view from the room always felt very familiar but I was unclear why. One day I realized it was because the house was built in the 1880s and I’d seen similar views in the paintings of Vuillard, Bonnard and especially Matisse simply because they were painting in similar rooms where windows opened to other windows onto balconies. I like especially the mystery of what’s going on past the balcony.
