Artist Statement
My work deals with socio-ecological questions in connection with urban development and space. The starting point for my new work is my experience as a child with the Cold War propaganda of the 1980s while growing up in East Germany.
Beginning in 1954, the US Army established 12 permanent launch sites around the Bay Area with associated control, housing, and command posts. Coastal defenses around San Francisco during this period depended largely on the Nike anti-aircraft missile system. In the Bay Area are 12 abandoned Nike missile sites that operated as defense systems against a possible Soviet nuclear attack during the Cold War. All locations are photographed in their current state.
