I was separated from both my parents at the age of 7 to move to the U.S. with my older siblings, and so my earliest memories of my parents in Vietnam are very precious to me. My parents were both tailors, and as a kid I remember helping them. My father passed away suddenly last year while I was out of town, and I started experimenting with fabric to feel that connection again.

I have always been interested in layering new meaning on top of pre-existing objects, combining styles and materials, upcycling and collaging. By sewing fabric, the patterns and lines of stitching can make the painting more interesting, but it can also enrich the figurative story.
