Artist Statement
Paola de la Calle is a Colombian-American multidisciplinary artist whose work examines home, identity, borders, and nostalgia through the use of textiles, printmaking, and sculpture. "America Invertida," originally an illustration by artist Joaquin Torres-Garcia's upends ideas of traditional hierarchical structures by claiming the art of South America on its own terms, rather than in relation to that of the U.S. and Europe. Using the inverted map as a point of departure, de la Calle brings this idea into a contemporary context in relation to migration by utilizing imagery that references to colonization, resource extraction, and the working class.
