Artist Statement
This weaving was inspired by a vintage stash of bright yellow plastic bags — from a San Francisco Chronicle newspaper subscription in the 1980s — too dazzling and seductive to discard. Saved from our throwaway culture the plastic is elevated and transformed during the process of changing it into yarn for weaving. The plastic bags used here add another ironic dimension as they at one time protected the printed newspaper, now a long-gone artifact from decades ago. A small collection of plastic beads, the spools inside dental floss, are a token that is saved from the waste stream. To see this throw away stuff elevated in status and transformed during the laborious making of art is humbling.
