Artist Statement
My work centers unapologetically dark charcoal figures - archetypes that subvert anti-Blackness, as they are beautiful, culturally rooted, spiritual, abundant, and empowered. I fortify them with symbolic imagery - animal totems, medicinal plants, iridescent gold, and cultural emblems. With mixed media, I layer a variety of vibrant materials to echo the complex subject matter. This piece was inspired by a Rumi poem - “A Necessary Autumn Inside Each,” and personifies the metaphor of flowers growing through cracks in rocks. Anointed by the Adinkra symbol for "the dynamics of life/time's changes" she alchemizes the suffering that fractures her, renews herself, and blossoms time and time again.
