Hands carry the weight of our labor and invisible hardships. My artwork focuses on people interacting with their environment through the perspective of hands. I am especially interested in painting how people in Black and Brown communities reclaim their right to humanity in their quiet moments despite capitalistic society emphasizing their replaceability. In “Bubbles’ Secret Garden,” my grandmother nurtures her garden in Oakland that she’s used as an outlet for self care. The act of gardening is a time consuming, yet fulfilling ritual that alleviates oneself from the stressful realities of things outside your control. Even though her hand is recyclable, Bubbles thrives in her green world.
