Artist Statement
Carnaval to me is about being SEEN. Growing up as 1st Gen Mexican American I would see how my parents were forced to assimilate + hear the story why they had to do it. Bo Ren spoke it beautifully,
"My parents were tasked with the job of survival and I with self-actualization. The immigrant generational gap is real. What a luxury it is to search for purpose, meaning, and fulfillment."
When I photograph Carnaval, I see folxs who survived, fought, and who now pass down the riches of our cultura to future sun kissed babies. Te quiero mucho Carnaval.
