“The Rise of the Yellow Vests Act 23 - The Burning of Notre Dame” the viewer sees that it is based on a much older painting by Thomas Cole “The Course of Empire - Destruction.” My love of art history and how art can influence current events fuels my passion for expression.
Using older known paintings in my collages helps tie the viewer into understanding the lessons of the past and how they are repeating in current times. Having the internet at my fingers, I gather images of police brutality, yellow vest protesters, and other symbolic imagery. Once these are on my computer, I remove the backgrounds so that the main character is isolated from its surroundings.
