Working as a contemporary realist, Julie Grantz creates narrative, large-scale, figurative work in charcoal and pastel. The narrative in her work is created from her personal experiences of the silent bias against women, and sexist double standards that women face, as well as the traumas women endure which our society normalizes and suppresses. She creates as a way to learn the art of arming herself against the silent violence of cultural norms and expectation. “Wishbone” symbolizes her desire for both herself as a woman, and as well as for all other women to have a voice within a culture that prefers for women to carry themselves calmly and silently. She lives and works in Alameda.
