I often paint architecture from the past that is still surviving in the modern world. This painting, “Gas & Diesel 24/7,” is based on photos of a retro gas station taken on a trip through a sleepy small town in southern Arizona. Its iconic '60s architecture stands proudly on the main drag with its fresh coat of red, white & blue paint. I initially painted a smaller black & white version, distilling the composition to its essentials. It had all the elements that I look for in a painting – strong light and shadows, architectural angles and the subtext of isolation.
