Artist Statement
The paintings are constructed as they are being painted and he often uses palette knives instead of brushes. When the primary color was mixed it reminded me of the de Young museum's patina and so the shape was created from peripheral memory that reminded me of the architecture. The colors of the park and the distant tower was also included. This is not a rendering but an homage to this amorphous building.
The color block paintings are narrative neutral consisting of simple color/shapes on linen that play out parallel relationships distilled from a critical view of the built environment and from the ethereal spaces experienced in nature.
