My most significant work to date, this image represents a meditation on modern masculine ideals. "Nopalito" is presented as resilient warrior archetype with his great weapons and armor, however, he is caught in a quiet moment of reflection as a black snake representing the shadow self slithers out from a hole in his armor. The painting centers on this moment of reckoning and healing, depicting a man whose power is rooted in tenderness. A family of hummingbirds has built a nest on his shoulder, and the ruins of a Spanish Mission linger in the background. The skull emblem on his headband shows that death is never far from his thoughts.
