During Covid isolation, the streets were wide open to photographers. Wandering around Telegraph Ave in Oakland to photograph the poignant graffiti following the death of George Floyd, I came upon this gated and locked ticket booth in the marble lobby of the Art Deco Fox Theater. The movies were no longer available during Covid. We had to stream movies in the isolation of our homes. Gone were the grand lobbies and decorated walls of the movie palaces, which offered a shared experience to all who came. Gone was the smell of popcorn, the velvet seats and the huge screens. Covid had locked us out of this communal ritual. Little did I know that this closure was the first of many to follow.
