jamil nasim makes work which centers the depiction of the everyday experiences in Black life. By moving between haunting portraits and fantastical mise-en-scène, their paintings bear the mark of the brush and the materiality of the paint, creating a synthesis that straddles the line between figuration and a pared-down symbolic mode. By drawing from a variety of sources, including archival photos, genealogical research of their family's lineage, pop culture, Black folk art, & African art, nasim seeks to create a counter canon of representation and knowledge production that extends beyond the conventional narrative of Black life in the Atlantic diaspora.
