Artist Statement
My ongoing series, “Beneath My Skin Is The History of My Beauty” invests a universal language that speaks to our interdependence to each other and nature. My art looks at ways to promote dialog around issues concerning cultural history, family mythology, and personal identity.
I create photograms: photographs that are made without the use of a camera. I layer natural and man-made elements such as water, plants and people on the surface of silver-based photographic paper. The paper is exposed to light from an enlarger to create a shadowy silhouette image. This 19th century process has an immediacy, rawness, and truth that is not found in images created with a camera.
