I found these modest undergarment shapes neatly rolled up on the shelves at SCRAP, a creative re-use center in San Francisco founded in 1976 by a group a volunteers, including artist Ruth Asawa. SCRAP generates oceans of possibility by diverting more than 200 tons of creative materials from landfill each year. The pieces felt bold, yet innocent and vulnerable, emblematic of the pressure on young women to flow into lives of cheerful submission instead of growing into their full potential.
