Artist Statement
I made this digital drawing, "Salon Après Tetris (5 Seconds of Fame)" specifically in response to The de Young Open 2023 call for entries. I built the scene in Rhinoceros 3D and then painstakingly drew all the parts and the person in Adobe Illustrator. I don’t think I ever played the puzzle-inspired video game Tetris, but I am familiar with the verb “to Tetris” as it applies to organizing my own art-crammed storage space. In his 1976 essay, “Inside the White Cube,” Brian O’Doherty describes the unfortunate prospect for Salon artists of having their work “skied,” or possibly “floored.” Is the person on the ladder the artist, placing the T-shaped "artwork" in its assigned spot?
