Artist Statement
This work was formed out of reflection on burgeoning information technologies. Probing the thick cloud of seemingly ambivalent tech I began to feel an existential anxiety in the face of machines that observe, emulate, and manipulate our behavior. I made this painting by feeding a video recording of myself into Google's computer vision software (YouTube) and allowing it to select for me the most significant compositions contained in the file (a thumbnail). The challenge was starting with the foundation laid by the machine, which was merely an aesthetic choice, and working from there to develop an artwork.
